Base’s B20 Bet Is Getting Bigger — Could the Next Billion-Dollar Project Be Built Here?

A new token standard is turning Base into a bigger playground for onchain assets—and the next major project could already be taking shape.

The next major crypto narrative may not begin with a new blockchain. It could begin with a new way of creating assets.

Base is putting increasing attention on B20, its native ERC-20-compatible token standard designed to make asset issuance more deeply integrated into the network. Rather than treating B20 as a single cryptocurrency, Base positions it as infrastructure for a broader ecosystem of tokens and programmable assets.

That distinction matters.

The B20 story is not simply about launching another token and hoping for speculative demand. It is about creating an environment where different types of assets can be issued, transferred, and integrated into applications built on Base.

And the scale of what could eventually emerge is where the conversation gets interesting.

The Billion-Dollar Question

Base has already demonstrated that B20 can support assets beyond the typical crypto-native token.

Coinbase’s tokenized stocks are now live on Base using the B20 standard, with the underlying shares held through regulated custody arrangements. Base says these tokens can be held, transferred, and used across the broader Base ecosystem.

That development gives B20 a much bigger potential addressable market than a standard token-launch narrative.

But there is an important distinction between ecosystem growth and a guaranteed billion-dollar project.

There is currently no official confirmation from Base that a particular upcoming B20 project will reach a $1 billion market capitalization. The more defensible story is that B20 creates infrastructure capable of supporting projects that could potentially scale to that level if they attract sufficient users, liquidity, builders, and real-world utility.

That makes the question less about which token is next and more about what kind of application can turn B20 infrastructure into a sustainable network effect.

Why Builders Are Watching

Base's broader 2026 strategy focuses on global markets, payments, tokenization, and bringing more builders onto the network. The company says its objective is to make Base a place where assets and markets can operate continuously onchain.

B20 fits directly into that direction.

For developers, a native token standard can reduce some of the friction involved in launching and managing assets. For users, it could eventually mean a larger selection of assets that can interact with wallets, trading venues, and other onchain applications.

The ecosystem is already showing signs of activity. A September report citing Dune Analytics data said B20 tokens had surpassed $1 billion in cumulative decentralized-exchange trading volume roughly two months after launch, although much of that activity was concentrated in memecoins.

That figure should not be confused with a $1 billion market capitalization. Volume measures trading activity; market capitalization measures the value assigned to outstanding tokens.

Still, the difference is revealing: there is already meaningful market activity around the standard, while the search continues for projects capable of turning that activity into durable value.

What Could Create the Next Breakout?

The strongest B20 projects may not necessarily be the ones with the loudest launches.

They could be projects that solve a clear problem.

That might mean infrastructure, tokenized assets, financial applications, consumer products, AI-driven platforms, or entirely new applications that take advantage of programmable assets.

Base is already positioning itself around a much broader onchain economy. Its roadmap highlights markets, payments, stablecoins, builders, and tokenized assets as major areas of development.

The result is a growing question for the market:

If B20 becomes a major asset-issuance layer on Base, which project will capture the attention, liquidity, and users needed to become the next major ecosystem heavyweight?

Nobody can know the answer yet.

But that uncertainty is exactly what makes the developing B20 market worth watching.

From Hype to Signals

For anyone following emerging projects, the challenge is separating genuine ecosystem traction from short-lived attention.

Market capitalization alone does not tell the entire story.

Trading volume, liquidity, holder growth, product development, integrations, developer activity, and user adoption can all provide additional context. Watching how these signals develop over time can offer a more informed picture of whether a project is building something durable or simply benefiting from temporary hype.

That is where prediction markets can add another layer to the conversation.

Instead of only asking “What is happening?”, users can explore the question:

“What happens next?”
